ARNI – FAQ

In this FAQ, we provide you with an overview of frequently asked questions about ARNI. If you have any further questions, please contact us using our contact form.

Operation and installation of ARNI Pro

How much effort is involved in operating an ARNI Pro?

The ARNI is set up at the location once in the spring and dismantled in the fall. During the initial setup, data about the location is entered via a menu. You should allow about two to three hours for the initial setup and installation.
During the winter, the device must be stored in a dry place. During the season, the ARNI should be checked at least every two to three weeks. The memory sticks are changed during this process. The data must then be uploaded to the project homepage. Finally, ARNIs are part of a development project. We update the software at regular intervals to improve its functionality. The updates are easy to perform.

What are the advantages for me if I operate an ARNI?

ARNIs record all nocturnal insects that land on the screen during a summer season and are photographed. You have direct access to this image data and, from 2027, you will also receive retrospective evaluations in the form of species lists. Companies and institutions have the option of using the data for public relations and sustainability reports.

What are suitable locations for an ARNI in the city?

We operate almost 40 ARNIs in 8 cities in Germany. We are still looking for a few locations in Regensburg, Bremen, Freiburg, and Ludwigshafen. The ARNIs should be set up in a green space; not directly next to walls or hedges, and fenced in if possible. Please contact us via the contact form if you would like to collaborate with us.

What are suitable locations for an ARNI in a good habitat?

We currently operate around 20 ARNI Pros in species-rich habitats and are still looking for other interesting locations. These should be of supraregional interest and contain species that are rare or that we have not yet sufficiently recorded. Please contact us via the contact form if you would like to participate.

What does a typical recording night look like?

ARNIs operate autonomously and use GPS data to determine the running times for their location each night. The ARNI is inactive during the day. At night, images are taken at two-minute intervals. The system switches off one hour before sunrise.

How are ARNIS powered and how much energy do they consume?

If a power connection is available, the system can be powered by mains electricity. In this case, an ARNI is operated with a power supply unit. This incurs electricity costs of around 10 euros per year. If the systems are located outdoors, they can be powered by a solar system. This comprises a solar module and a waterproof box containing electronics and a battery.

What should I do if the system is not working or there are problems?

ARNIs have only recently been developed and, even after two years of operational experience, problems can of course still arise. Possible errors are documented in detail in the manual. It also describes the best way to solve each problem. Please use our contact form if necessary.

What are the costs of operating an ARNI?

The LEPMON project provides a limited number of systems free of charge. The power supply costs around €10 per year. Power supply solutions are agreed on an individual basis.

Can ARNIs and the power supply for them also be purchased? What are the costs and sources of supply for ARNI?

ARNI-Pro are manufactured and distributed by k2s Lights, Jena. Please contact our project using the contact form. If you need a quote, please contact k2w directly. Materials for supplying mains power (power supply unit, box) or solar power (module, box, electronics, battery) can be assembled yourself or purchased from Insects & Light, Jena.

Data transmission and evaluation of image data

How do I transfer data from the ARNI?

ARNI stores all data on a USB stick. This stick is replaced every two to three weeks. You should upload the contents to the LAUP data portal. To do this, we ask you to set up a user account with just a few clicks.

What do I learn from the findings when I maintain an ARNI?
How do I find out which species have been detected?
Can I access the images and evidence?

Our LAUP data portal allows you to view all images recorded by the ARNIs in use. A search mask is currently being developed to ensure targeted access to the data. Please note that a user account is required for this.

Can I participate in LEPMON even if I don’t monitor ARNI?

Yes, this is possible. For example, anyone can help with the annotation/identification of the photographed animals. Annotation means providing training data for the AI. You can participate as a beginner, advanced user, or expert. Annotation takes place on the LAUP data portal. Please set up a user account with just a few clicks.

What is the danger posed by the UV lamp?

The UV source used is only active at night between dusk and dawn. No precautions are necessary during the day. At night, do not look directly into the lamp and keep a distance of at least 50 cm.

What knowledge is required?

No prior knowledge is required to operate ARNI. However, it is necessary to follow the detailed operating instructions step by step to set up the system and navigate the menu.
